Living in a small space can present unique challenges, especially when you have so much stuff but such little space!
Whether you're in a cozy apartment, a studio, or just dealing with limited space in a larger home, creating a sense of openness is key to feeling comfortable and at ease. The good news is, with a few smart design strategies, you can transform your small space to be stylish and functional. In this blog post, we’ll explore some simple but effective tips and tricks to make any room feel more expansive and airy, no matter how limited the space really is. Let's dive in!
Glass furniture
Consider glass coffee tables, dining tables, or bedsides. They always look stylish and contemporary, but most importantly they blend in perfectly with any surroundings because light can pass through them without any obstructions, creating the illusion of more open space. Glass fulfils so many practical needs, but more significantly, it does not take away from the appearance of your room because it can be incorporated into so many different design styles.
Lighting is the best accessory
The sense of space is significantly affected by lighting, which is often ignored. In addition to downlights, using large floor lamps in living spaces can provide a soft lighting alternative. Your furnishings' sharp edges and lines will be muted by this lighting, which will also give the impression of more space and make you and your guests feel more comfortable.
Sheer curtains act as a distributer for natural light. When hung as high as possible over the window frame, they can promote the appearance of more space in bedrooms, children's play areas, or home offices. The curtains will conceal the sharp edges of the window frame and draw the light up the whole wall. This will attract attention to the highest point in the room, which will make the space feel elongated as the eye has to draw a further distance to reach the ground.
Floating shelves
You may showcase your favourite peices on the wall by using floating shelves. The idea is that it simply clears the floor of clutter and large furniture, making more floor space visible and therefore creating more open areas.
An additional piece of advice that falls under this category is to mount your TV on a wall instead of having it sit on a TV unit. This gives the impression of more space since it pulls the eye up the wall and automatically elevates the height of the ceiling.
Paint choice
Selecting the appropriate paint colour is crucial to making sure your room appears spacious and bright. Because of their visual weight, ability to reflect or absorb light, and their power to evoke our emotions, certain colours can affect how a space is seen.
White is typically the safest choice when choosing a paint colour for a small area. However, a lot of people choose to use vibrant, fun-coloured wall paint to reflect who they are and their own design taste. Try to choose pastel colours or softer neutrals when selecting a colour other than white.
